At the beginning of 2018, Australia canceled the 457 visa subclass and instead started three new types of visa permits depending on the type of skill the skilled immigrants possess. And despite all the difficulty, it hasn’t stop Indians and the Chinese to continue migrating to Australia. Well, it did reduce the number of international students from countries other than China and India traveling to Australia for studies by half.
Even then, Indian and Chinese students are ready to pay a huge amount of cash to study in Australia and have become a major source of income for universities. There is a 14.1 percent increase in applications between July and December 2016 and 2017, taking the total number to 190,000. Compared to 2016, Nepalese applications increased by 46 percent in 2017, while Indian applications increased by 32 percent, and applications from China increased by 13 percent. Visa approval rates were almost 100 percent. The Department of Home Affairs confirmed that compared to 2016, there was a 12.1 percent increase in interest shown by Chinese students in 2017.
However, what will happen to them will be very different than what happened with their seniors. They will have to find a job immediately and will most likely apply for visas like temporary graduate visa or 485 visas, which will give them a two to four-year visa or an 18-month visa. After that, they will be classified into three types of visas.
Different types of work permit
Those who get a job in the Short-Term Skilled Occupations List will get a two-year work permit. Jobs in the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List will get a work permit of up to four years. These three visas are renewable only one. They need to stay in Australia for three years to get permanent residency. Now, that’s some smart thinking by the Indians and Chinese.
