According to sources, there could be an increase in the number of US visas allocated for highly skilled workers due to the Immigration proposal based on merit which was put together by Jared Kushner, a senior adviser in the White House. It is expected that next week, a comprehensive plan will be presented to the President who will either send it back for changes or adopt it.
However, there are no plans for the young people who arrived illegally in the country and were under the protection of Barack Obama, the former US President in a 2014 program which was known as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), nor for those with the Temporary Protected Status. As such, the Democrats have insisted on the protection of the DACA recipients.
A Senior Administration official said that Jared Kushner has held about fifty listening sessions on immigration with conservative groups. According to sources, he has Kevin Hassett and Stephen Miller, the Economic Adviser and Policy Adviser of the White House, working with him. Sources also say that there may be some close curtain plans ongoing.
Throughout Trump’s Presidency, even as a presidential candidate, he has been enforcing strict immigration policy, from pressing for a US- Mexico border to be made in the form of border Wall, to the description of those who fled from Central American countries to the USA, using bruising rhetoric. These immigration proposals have always been supported largely by the Republicans, but the current one aims to draw them more closely.
Higher numbers of Highly Skilled workers needed
An increase in the number of visas allocated to highly skilled workers has been insisted for by some people in the business community in the US. According to them, this will attract more foreign workers for specialized jobs which will help in boosting the country’s economy. Even the President has spoken of such need.
According to sources, the number of visas allocated annually to highly skilled workers will either be raised slightly or kept at the same level.
However, the main goal, which is a significant goal for the Trump administration is to reconstruct the visa program to a system based on merit. Canadian and Australian immigration systems have been reviewed by the Officials working on the US immigration plan, projecting them as possible models for future immigration plans.
As a way to address the need for seasonal workers by the US agriculture community, a guest-worker program has been included in the proposal, by the group but it has not been finalized. In order to boost his chances of re-election, the President has sought ways to appease farmers.
Sources also state that other potential plans in the proposal include ensuring safe trade along the US borders by modernizing the entry ports of the borders, as well as prevent illegal acts. Reducing the number of immigrants entering the country based on ties with family is also part of the aims.
Steps have already been taken by Donald Trump with regards to those who overstay their visas in the country.
