According to new research, illegal immigration may likely arise when the UK ends freedom of movement after Brexit.
According to the Social Market Foundation (SMF) reports, more people will try to come and live in the UK illegally once the legal routes of migration are closed after Brexit. The report stated that politicians should be truthful about the actual consequences of Brexit to avoid backlash from voters when they realize that their immigration fears are not solved as expected.
From previous cases analyzed by the study, it was found that there was a time entry policies were tightened and immigration restricted. Unrestricted migration to Britain from Commonwealth countries was ended in the 1960s and also the Mexican workers’ program was stopped by the US in 1965. It was discovered that placing stricter immigration rules often led to increasing the number of people migrating to the country because the migrants cannot easily travel to and from so they have to stay in the country.
Also, illegal migration is fueled as migrants tend to use other routes instead of entering the country legally. As such, a prediction has been made by SMF that more illegals will increase in the UK after Brexit as EU citizens who have no rights to stay in the UK will actually decide to stay. The government has therefore been asked to open up to the citizens on the real impacts of Brexit so as to avoid fueling immigration fears.
The government has made an announcement about immigration plans after Brexit. The new system will give priority to the UK needed skilled workers, as such, a new route will be created for temporary workers, and skilled work visa will be scrapped.
Response from the Home Office
According to a spokeswoman from the Home office, the new system of immigration will focus on attracting the needed talents in the UK while ending free movement. She also added that illegal working and illegal immigration would be tackled by immigration enforcement even after Brexit.
