According to Caroline Nokes, the Minister for immigration, UK employers will not have to do any extra check on employees from EU to know if they have the right to work in the UK should a no-deal Brexit occurs. She made this point to clarify the government’s position when she appeared before MPs to clear the air concerning the issue of deciding if to create eligibility status for their employees from Europe. This was necessary as she had last week told the home affairs committee that they would have to go through rigorous checks.
Home Secretary Reassures MPs
To further reassure MPs who were still a bit skeptical about the update, the Home Secretary, Sajid Javid told them that they would not be asked to do any new task from what they are already doing currently.
With the D-day for the UK to leave EU fast approaching, the new immigration policy is being seriously scrutinized, and the ministers have not still announced what policy they would adopt apart from the constant statement by Theresa May that there will be an end to the free movements.
Theresa Nokes who was obviously bewildered by a question from Labour’sYvette Cooper said that employers should continue checking the passports of their employees as has been the trend, whether they are citizens of Britain or Europe. She said that employers would not be asked to differentiate either if a deal occurs or not.
With more curious MPs seeking more clarity on the subject matter, she explained that in due course they would get to hear more about the settled status scheme. She said the immigration bill which had been promised a long time ago would be published very soon. She added that more than 0.03% of all the citizens of EU living in the UK had been granted the right to settle. She, however, could not ascertain the date that the free movement will stop.
Nookes mentioned that from her point of view, the rights should be added to the Immigration laws of UK and that it is essential for individuals to have a hitch-free process. She also said that citizens of EU are a very useful part of the community and country, and their contribution to the nation is very much welcomed.
