Collaboration Between AU and EU for Better Migration Routes

The African Union (AU) is working with the European Union (EU) to make a move towards securing a legal and an easier means of getting into EU countries. This step will effectively reduce the number of youths who die while trying to get in through illegal means.

The idea could be connected to the fact that a lot of people have come to realize how significant migration is to the infrastructural development and economic growth of a country. African countries and all other countries in the world would need to provide better, legal and safer migration routes to benefit from it largely.

Why every country should support Immigration

Advantages of Immigration are largely reflected in the nation’s domestic production rate, availability of employment opportunities, the standard of living, inclusive growth rate and trade. Immigration is a major catalyst for boosting economic development in the destination countries.

When a country experiences a rise in the number of immigrants coming in, it will also experience a simultaneous increase in its agricultural, infrastructural, mining and technological sectors as immigrants help fill vacancies in skills and labor markets.

Migration is a major supplier of labor and simultaneously boosts economic activities in receiving countries. It also encourages the transfer of knowledge and skills. The report has it that migration is somewhat related to 10 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Brigitte Mukanga-Eno, the Deputy Representative of the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said that due to the fact that a lot of countries are still in need of labor, the might be needful to come up with a legal way of getting easy access into the country, rather than allow disappointed youths whose visa applications have not been accepted to seek illegal and unsafe means.

Core Reasons behind Illegal Immigration

Asides seeking greener pastures in richer countries, people could also migrate illegally due to peer pressure, the decision to study or work in the urban city, war or violence at home, corrupt government officers, insecure borders and the absence of a strong legal system.

Illegal immigration can also be traced to other factors like incompetent law enforcement and Immigration officers who cannot effectively cover the national borders, international criminal gangs, inadequate legislation,  political desire to enforce specific laws, fake marriages where one party has a hidden agenda to enslave the other and situations where naive parents who wish to better the lives of their children send them off with wealthy friends or family members hence leaving them at high risk.

Why the Collaboration between AU and EU

The media’s reports about migration in Africa have been in a way off balance. Migrants are mostly always portrayed under subjects like trafficking, prostitution, and death as headlines of dead Nigerians who were only searching for more comfortable places but became victims of human trafficking are popular in the various media forms.

The reports, however, tend to be biased as they fail to mention the socioeconomic benefits of migration to nations. A higher number of these narratives warn prospective migrants from Africa to stay put and rather work towards the betterment of their countries.

This falls in line with the EU’s agenda to discourage non- Western Immigrants from migrating to Europe. One can deduce that the domineering nature of the European media has mostly affected what is being published in the Nigerian space.

For this reason, the inhumane treatment that migrants face en route Europe should be put to an end. That is why it is very important that the African Union is working with the European Union to create better platforms that can provide legal immigration routes.

Achieving the desired result

The two parties have to plan together and implement Policies that will help produce desired results.

To get to that point, the source and destination countries must align their development plans with the migration, investment, and trade policies. Both countries should understand that their full potentials can be realized if the is consistency within the migration, investment, technology, and trade policies. Emphasis should, however, be placed on skill enhancement and human capital while formulating the policies.

Considerations must also be made on the migration of women and children, putting in place specific policy frameworks which address their safety, vulnerability, and employment.
