According to the latest figures, the difference between entry into and exit from the UK over the last year stands at 283,000 representing about three times the 100,000 targets set by the government of the country. Over this period non-EU arrivals reached its highest since 2004. The 261,000 non-EU arrivals contributed to the huge arrivals over the past year. This jump in non-EU arrivals coincides with a fall in EU arrivals as a result of Brexit uncertainties. Net migration to the UK from EU countries was at its lowest since 2009.
Prime Minister Theresa May, who is presently in Egypt for EU leaders’ gathering, revealed that the big leap seen in immigration from non-EU countries is an indication of how well the UK economy is doing. She did not appear bordered by the record-breaking number but restated her commitment to see that those numbers are significantly reduced to tens of thousands.
The official spokesman to the Prime Minister said the country remains a very appealing destination to highly-skilled workers like nurses and doctors and the country’s pacesetting universities are continuously and increasingly attracting international students.
Increased Immigration- a Real Concern
There is concern amidst stakeholders that the significant gap between the immigration target and what actually played out poses a threat to the nation.
Mrs. May has made cutting immigration significantly her priority since resuming office, but it appears she has been fighting a lone battle for the most part.
Her spokesman said the effort is being put into building an Immigration system that is in the interest of the country. This includes decreasing immigration to sustainable levels.
Labor’s shadow home secretary, Diane Abbott, condemns the government policy stating it is more about maintaining constant campaign against immigration rather than actually reducing the numbers.
