Canada’s Unemployment Rate Hit a Record Low in November

According to the monthly Labour Force Survey by Statistics Canada, the rate of unemployment in Canada got very low in November.

Statistics Canada measures the unemployment rate according to the percentage of jobless people in the labor force. It was found that in November, the number of unemployed people in the population dropped to 5.6%, an achievement which was last seen in 1976.

This data implied that there were 19million employed people in Canada as of November, hence creating a 0.5% increase in the number of people employed in the country over the last one month.

Drop in Unemployment in Six Provinces

Last month, six Provinces experienced a drop in the rate of unemployment, with Alberta and Quebec having the highest numbers.

The number of people employed in Quebec increased by 26,000, and Statistics Canada said that the increase was due to full-time employment. In the entire province, over 4 million people were employed last month, and the total unemployment rate for the province was 5.4%. The agency mentioned that in the province of Quebec, there was an increase in the number of people employed in the technical, educational, scientific and professional sectors.

The province of Alberta also experienced an increase in employment rate as 24,000 more people got full-time jobs.

In Ontario, 20,000 new employees joined the workforce last month.

In British Columbia (BC), there were 16,000 more people employed in the province in November. Even after a little increase in November, the province’s rate of unemployment is 4.4%, which is one of the lowest in the country.

The rate of employment increased by 2,600 in Manitoba and 5,500 in Saskatchewan.

Major Recruiting Industries

Statistics Canada has mentioned that the most notable employment rise in November is recorded in the technical, scientific and professional services which had over 26,000 new employees, and the highest numbers were from Quebec and Ontario.

The Health Care and Social Assistance sectors also experienced an employment rise in November with 19,000 new employees.
