The Canadian Government has announced that its Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program would reopen in the latter part of January 2019.
In a tweet by Immigrations, Refugees and Citizenship Canada it was reported that information regarding the next opening would be made available in the forthcoming weeks.
Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)
The Canadian Parents and Grandparents Program is designed to allow permanent residents and citizens of Canada who are 18 years and above to sponsor their parents and grandparents to the country for Permanent Residence.
Last year, the Expression of Interest for this program was opened on the 2nd of January, but the IRCC had reported that this year would be different.
This year, the IRCC looks forward to processing up to 20,000 applications under the PGP.
Method of Selection
IRCC has decided to replace the highly controversial lottery selection method which was introduced and also scrapped out last year with a more reliable process of selection by the first arrival.
In this method, the first 20,000 eligible applications from sponsors will be selected. The sponsors must submit an Expression of Interest and also satisfy the program’s eligibility requirements.
The former method of selection, which was the random selection method had been highly criticized and considered partial as so many people had to wait for so many years for luck to fall on them to be able to sponsor their parents and grandparents.
According to the IRCC, the decision to use this new method of selection was influenced by the opinions of the clients and stakeholders. It said that the selection on the basis of ‘first come, first serve’ would preferably organize the intake process of the program better and give clients an improved experience.
It added that it will help the government to have a more flexible application process, thereby guaranteeing a more significant number of applications received.
